Description:

I used my own fingerprint and changed it to the shape in the middle of the work. The background pattern is inspired by Persian Kilim (which is a flat tapestry woven carpet or rug). But the idea and inspiration behind the painting is Iran and people’s understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. In Iran these words barely differentiated or even understood, which is not that surprising knowing about LGBTIQ rights in Iran. What actually I find more irritating is that fact that legality of sex change surgery has been used as an alternative way to force non-heteronormative genders to fit into categories of male and female in order to prevent acts that fall outside gender binaries.
